54% OF GERMAN-SPEAKING TYROL WANTS SEPARATION FROM ITALY

(AGI) - Bolzano, Jun 6 - Alarming data concerning the future of the Italian-speaking population of region South Tyrol have emerged from a research commissioned by South Tyrol's patriotic body (Suedtiroler Heimatbund), bringing together former detainees who were found guilty of terror attacks in the 1960's and 1970's. According to the research, 54.67% of German-speaking and Ladin-speaking South Tyrol's population would like to leave Italy, 33.4% would back the creation of an independent South Tyrol state and 21.27% call for a reunification of the Tyrol region: Northern Tyrol (currently in Austria, whose capital is Innsbruck) and South Tyrol whose main city is Bolzano. The telephone survey was conducted on a sample of 500 people by Austrian research institute Soffi and lasted one week (November 24 to December 2 2005). Presenting the results of the survey, Suedtiroler Heimatbund said that it will keep fighting for South Tyrol's right to self-determination and criticised both Suedtiroler Volkspartei (Svp, the party which brings together German-speaking population of the region) and Austria.
